Writing Tip: The Magic of Setting Intentions

In the last article, I shared nine tips for creating an environment for writing and creating. I would love to know what works for you! Post something in the comments.

Tip #2 is a 7-step process to set intention. This is more than goal setting. This is establishing a field of energy to support your intuition and creative flow. The creative environment is a container and the intention provides clarity and direction.

In July 2010, my daughter, Hannah and I moved to an apartment in Burbank, California. I had a window of six months where I committed to write everyday. I began by creating an environment for writing by beginning each day with a routine of Tai Chi, meditating, writing in my journal and walking ten minutes to Priscilla’s coffee shop in Toluca Lake. My intention was to write for three hours (6–9am). Within a few weeks, the words were flowing before I reached the coffee shop so I recorded the ideas on Voice Memos on my phone then listened to them as I began to write. The Intention grew as writing about grief transformation emerged which led to a blogtalk radio show I hosted with 44 days of grief transformation topics and guests over the holidays in 2010 that led to starting an organization called Heal My Voice in January 2011.

Earlier this year I set an intention of writing three pages in my journal everyday…
