Day Four:

Healing Series: Dreaming and a Calling

The mythologist Joseph Campbell used to say that we’re having experiences all the time that hint at our hungers. He insisted that we must learn to listen for them, learn to recognize them. The great sacrilege, he said, in terms of the soul’s integrity, is that of ‘inadvertence, of not being alert, not awake.’ ~Gregg Levoy, Callings

Healing opens a space for dreaming when we have more spaciousness to listen to our callings.

Recently, I was completing four months of living in an Airbnb in West Los Angeles while preparing to fly to Seattle for eight weeks of connecting with friends and house sitting. The night before I left, I woke up in the middle of the night with “travel trauma” memories from the past surfacing in my dreams. (As an aside, I’ve been living a house-free, digital-nomadic lifestyle for ten years, I love to live in different places and it fills me with joy and great experiences. Over the years I have had a couple of challenging situations like a mosquito infested hotel room after a 12-hour day of driving and it makes for a great story, not a trauma.)

Tossing and turning in the bed, I couldn’t shake a variety of uncomfortable feelings of fear and anger from the past, so I decided to get up, get ready and start my day…
