Heal My Voice

“I went to strip away what I had been taught,” Georgia O’Keefe said, describing her retreat to New Mexico from New York City in the 1920’s, “to accept as true my own thinking. This was one of the best times of my life. There was no one around to look at what I was doing, no one interested, no one to say anything about it one way or another. I was alone and singularly free.”

Let’s begin with the question: What does it mean to heal?

At 67 years old, I think back to how many times I have “stripped away what I have been taught.” The number of cycles where something new was revealed and something old was stripped away so that I could experience the new. It is probably why I am so drawn to the word healing. The stripping away requires honest reflection and some kind of recovery time after releasing old beliefs or an old way of living. Just like a physical wound, our emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies need time to rest, recover and heal.

The definition of healing includes:

· To become sound and healthy again.

· To alleviate.

· To correct or put right.

· To become whole again.
