My grandfather’s favorite book was Alice in Wonderland. He loved it so much that he gave me two copies. One when I was a child and one when I was an adolescent, with an inscription and limerick about going down the rabbit hole. Phil Schwind was a fisherman and a writer who lived on Cape Cod with my grandmother, Helen. They built their house, one room a year and lived in it the house from the beginning. The first room eventually became the kitchen but in the beginning it was the kitchen, breakfast nook, bedroom and living room. As a child, I remember feeling like the kitchen was a boat. The table folded up into the wall with other movable pieces and there were windows where you could see into the rooms on the other side, as if you were indoors and the bedrooms were outdoors. My grandparents lives were filled with the adventure of living off the land, loving each other and creative pursuits.

“Down the rabbit hole” is a term used in Alice in Wonderland which means “getting deep into something, or ending up somewhere strange.” Every year, I go down the rabbit hole with the women in The Incubator: An online coworking space for women creatives. As they are working on blogs, podcasts, books, art, online programs and workshops, music, dance and photography, I write for 100 days (November 1 — February 8) around a topic with questions for inquiry.
