Day Twenty-six: Community Building
“People need to feel safe to be who they are — to speak up when they have an idea, or to speak out when they feel something isn’t right.” ~Eunice Parisi-Carew, Collaboration Begins with You: Be a Silo Buster

The idea of schooling our children on a sailboat, in a camper or at home intrigued me. I first read about this in 1989 but the timing wasn’t right. My husband and I had just separated, and we needed both of our full-time incomes to support two households. Homeschooling did not seem possible and it was one more thing we didn’t agree on. Instead of homeschooling, I rearranged my work schedule and started volunteering in my kids’ classrooms on Fridays. I wanted to be present for my daughters, a support for the teacher and to hold a space of emotional safety for the students, knowing that when children feel safe, they are open to new ideas and learning. There are problems in the school system and in many classrooms. We all know that, right? The teachers need and deserve additional support to really teach and serve the children.
